Edit Document's Page Setup Printer Type If FLIGHTCHECK® can locate the printer description file (PDF or PPD) selected for the document, it can then peform some additional tests to determine if there is any type of problem regarding output through the use of this Printer Type. For example, the document's page size can be compared to the printable area obtained from the Printer's paper record, or if the PDF or PPD contains overriding information (such as screen angles, output resolution, line screens, paper width, data format, etc.) which might cause an unexpected problem when printing. Therefore, if FLIGHTCHECK® cannot locate the Printer Type specified by the document, it will post an alert and recommend you examine the document's Page Setup settings. Output Resolution If the Printer Type cannot be located, FLIGHTCHECK® will also alert you to the fact that it cannot correctly determine the output resolution. Halftone Screen FLIGHTCHECK® will also alert you when it cannot correctly determine the Halftone Screen value to be used when printing the document. Default Halftone Screen FLIGHTCHECK® allows you to enter a custom Halftone Screen value which you can use to "test" image resolutions. However, when doing so FLIGHTCHECK® will be forced to alert you that the new Halftone Screen value now differs from the value contained in the document. In this case, you may want to go back and edit the document and change the Halftone Screen value from within the application. Use PDF or Printer's Default Screen Values FLIGHTCHECK® will alert you when QuarkXPress® documents have been set to use the line screen values obtained from the designated PDF. To change this you will need to return the document back to Page Setup. ASCII Data/Binary Data Some output devices are not capable of printing Binary data, or print ASCII data too slowly (as the data will need to be converted to Binary during the printing process) and FLIGHTCHECK® will detect when the document has been generally set to output in either data format. Convert to Process This option should only be used when you want to convert spot colors into process colors during printing. Compatible Gradient Printing This option for an Illustrator document should only be used when you're having trouble printing gradients to a Level I printer, otherwise this setting might cause the RIP to fail. Landscape FLIGHTCHECK® will alert you when Landscape (sideways) mode has been selected for printing. This becomes even more important to know if the printing device is not capable of wide printing, in which case the printout will be "clipped". Reduce/Enlarge Generally speaking, it is not a good idea to scale the output, mostly because it adds processing time, but FLIGHTCHECK® will alert you when Reduce or Enlarge has been set. Too many times we reduce a printout in order to "fit" a large page size on an in-house LaserWriter, but then forget to change the scale factor back to 100%, a blunder which FLIGHTCHECK® will catch for you. Effects It is usually recommended one avoids using any of the extra Printer Effects available from Page Setup, including Font Substitution, Text Smoothing, Graphics Smoothing or Faster Bitmap Printing. Options As with Printer Effects, all of the additional Options should be avoided from Page Setup. These include Flip Horizontal or Vertical, Invert Image, Precision Bitmap Alignment (4% reduction), Larger Print Area and Unlimited Downloadable Fonts. 2 Up/4 Up FLIGHTCHECK® will alert you when printing 2 Up or 4 Up has been selected in the Page Setup. Cover Page Before/Cover Page After FLIGHTCHECK® will also alert you when printing a Cover Page Before or After has been selected in the Page Setup. As you can tell, many potential problems can fall under the category of "Page Setup" and preparing a document correctly the first time entails carefully ensuring these features regarding options which can affect output are desirably chosen. A top-notch flightchecker often goes straight to Page Setup the first moment they open the document from within the application. They wouldn't dare blindly print, but instead they first want to make sure the document is properly setup and that none of the Page Setup parameters are going to interfere.
